DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Attleboro Owner’s Guide

A properly fitted chimney cap on a DuraFlex liner system in Attleboro typically runs $340-$580 installed, depending on flue diameter and whether your crown needs reframing. We stock DuraFlex-compatible caps in 6″, 7″, and 8″ diameters on every truck, and most Attleboro installs are completed in a single visit. Most owners realize their cap has failed after finding rust streaks on the chimney breast, hearing animals in the flue, or noticing water spots on the ceiling below the fireplace during our wet New England springs.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex chimney caps fit the brand’s flexible stainless steel liner systems, not rigid Class A or masonry flues. The critical match is your liner’s outer diameter, not the nominal “6-inch” label. DuraFlex 316Ti and 304 alloy liners both use the same cap mounting geometry, but the 316Ti series common in Attleboro’s older homes handles our freeze-thaw cycles better and deserves a cap with matching corrosion resistance.

Check the stamped collar near the top of your liner, usually visible from the roof edge. You’re looking for “DuraFlex,” the diameter in inches, and often a manufacture date. Caps manufactured after 2018 use a slightly wider mesh spark arrestor to meet updated Massachusetts combustion codes. We carry both profiles and will match what you have.

OEM DuraFlex caps from Copperfield Supply are our standard. We’ve also fitted quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco when the homeowner’s existing anchor tabs are stripped and need a different clamping arrangement. We’ll show you both options and explain why one fits your situation better. Hearthstone Chimney Co. is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust staining on the chimney exterior or interior firebox. DuraFlex caps are stainless steel, but the galvanized mounting hardware supplied with some budget installs corrodes fast in Attleboro’s coastal-influenced air. The cap itself may be sound while the clamps fail, letting the assembly tilt and channel water behind it.
  • Water dripping into the firebox during rain, especially wind-driven nor’easters. The cap’s lid should overhang the flue by at least 1.5 inches. If the mesh screen has collapsed inward or the lid has blown off entirely, rain enters directly. We’ve found squirrel-chewed mesh on homes near Capron Park where the animals treated the soft aluminum screen like nesting material.
  • Drafts that reverse or smell smoky on mild days. A cap with clogged mesh restricts airflow. DuraFlex systems need precise draft pressure, and a blocked cap throws off the entire draw. This shows up most in spring and fall when outdoor and indoor temperatures are nearly equal.
  • Visible gaps between the cap base and the flue tile or crown. Thermal expansion loosens clamp bolts over seasons. Once the seal breaks, sparks and embers can escape, and small birds slip through. The 2021 Attleboro fire on County Street started with exactly this condition on an unswept chimney.
  • The cap is missing entirely after a storm. High wind lift separates poorly secured caps from their mounts. DuraFlex caps use a draw-band clamp that requires a specific torque; too loose and it blows off, too tight and it dents the liner collar. We’ve retrieved caps from yards as far as two houses away.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range in Attleboro
DuraFlex-compatible cap (parts) $140 - $260
Labor: remove old, install new, seal crown $180 - $280
Crown reframing (if needed) $120 - $220
Total installed $340 - $580

What drives the range: flue diameter (8″ caps cost more than 6″), whether your existing crown is sound enough to anchor to, and if we need to replace corroded clamp hardware or the draw-band itself. We photograph the crown condition during our Level-2 inspection and show you before quoting. No surprises on the bill. Every cap install carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground: binoculars will confirm if the cap is present, straight, and has all its mesh sides. If you have a stable ladder, a roof walk, and comfort with heights, you can verify the clamp bolts are present. That’s the limit we’d recommend.

What goes wrong with DIY: overtightening the draw-band distorts the DuraFlex liner collar, creating a leak path that won’t show until the next hard rain. Undertightening loses the cap in the first winter storm. Working on a roof near a chimney requires fall protection; the slope and height of many Attleboro colonials make this genuinely hazardous. And without a camera inspection, you can’t see if the liner itself has shifted or cracked beneath the cap, which would make a new cap pointless.

We carry DuraFlex-compatible caps, clamps, and sealants on every truck. Most Attleboro installs finish in under two hours. Call (508) 545-9737 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether this is a cap issue or something deeper.
