Meet the Attleboro Team Behind Hearthstone Chimney Co.

We’re the crew that shows up in Attleboro when your chimney needs more than a quick brush. Some of us have been doing this since the 1990s, others came up through the trades in the last decade, but we all answer to the same standard: the job’s not done until we’d sign off on it in our own homes. Russell Haines set that bar in 1984, and it’s still how we decide whether to pack up the truck or stay another hour.

Russell Haines, Owner

Russell started Hearthstone Chimney Co. in 1984 after watching too many homeowners in the Attleboro area get sold repairs they didn’t need by sweeps who never even looked up the flue. He holds a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential and has trained most of the technicians working in this region, though he’ll tell you his real qualification is 42 years of seeing what actually fails in Massachusetts chimneys. He still drives to jobs when the inspection’s complicated or a customer wants to talk through options in person. His idea of a good day is one where he can explain a liner problem in plain English and the homeowner understands why it matters before any paperwork gets signed. Off the clock, he’s usually restoring an old Stanley hand plane or arguing about Red Sox pitching rotations.

Marcus T., Lead Technician

Marcus has been with Hearthstone for 14 years and runs the most complex sweeps and Level-2 camera inspections in our Attleboro rotation. He’s CSIA certified and specializes in masonry evaluation, which means he’s the one crawling to the top of triple-deckers in the Highlands to check for spalling brick after a hard freeze. He keeps a weathered notebook of every chimney he’s inspected in Bristol County, organized by neighborhood, because he’s found that houses built in the same Attleboro development in the 1950s tend to fail in the same order. His human detail: he raises heritage turkeys on a small plot in Rehoboth and will talk your ear off about heritage breeds if you let him.

Jen K., Senior Installer

Jen handles our liner installations, cap and crown replacements, and any job that involves working with DuraFlex or HeatShield materials in tight spaces. She came to us from the HVAC trade in 2016 and brought a rigor about airflow and combustion that changed how we approach fireplace retrofits. She’s factory-trained on Olympia Chimney systems and Gelco cap assemblies, and she’s particularly good at explaining to Attleboro homeowners why a cheap cap from a hardware store won’t solve their water intrusion problem. Her install record is strong enough that Russell trusts her to sign off on her own jobs. Outside work, she coaches a youth hockey team in Pawtucket and has a reputation for being harder on her players than she is on creosote buildup.

Dave R., Service Coordinator

Dave’s the voice you hear when you call (508) 545-9737 at 10 PM on a Saturday because you smelled something odd from the fireplace. He’s been with Hearthstone for 8 years and knows our Attleboro schedule, our technician specialties, and which neighborhoods in the city tend to have clay flue tiles versus stainless steel liners. He doesn’t dispatch blindly; he’ll ask the right questions so Marcus or Jen shows up with the right equipment and materials already on the truck. He’s also the one who follows up after every job to make sure the 90-Day Done Right Promise isn’t just words on paper. Dave lives in North Attleborough, commutes by motorcycle when the weather allows, and keeps a detailed map of every Dunkin’ location with a reliable drive-thru between Attleboro and Providence.

Tyler B., Apprentice Technician

Tyler joined us in 2023 after completing the chimney sweep apprenticeship program through the Northeast Association of Chimney and Hearth Professionals. He’s working toward his CSIA certification under Marcus’s supervision and has already developed a sharp eye for crown cracks and deteriorating mortar joints. We pair him with senior techs on every job, but he’s progressed to handling basic sweeps and cap installations on his own in Attleboro’s single-family neighborhoods. He’s particularly careful with older homes in the historic district near County Street, where flue dimensions don’t match modern specs and patience matters more than speed. Tyler grew up in Mansfield, still plays in a local softball league, and is the only person on our crew who genuinely enjoys ladder work in January.
